   June and July 2008

Dear Pastor and Church,

In our last prayer letter I mentioned an invitation that we had received to Adopt a School. After talking to the director we found out it was more involved than we had expected. First, we had to agree to provide $120 per month to pay for the schools internet service. Second, we could not identify ourselves as members of the local Baptist Church for fear of offending the Catholics. Third, we could not use the Bible nor use “religious terms.” We could not choose the topics to be taught nor could we have special classes with the youth as we were led to believe. Bottom line, we decided not to get involved with the school at this time but we did leave the door open for next year with the promise from the school to be more candid with the church.

We did start the new work in Ensenada the first of this month. We have a group from the mother church that will be helping with the visitation and counseling. We commissioned the two young men that will be leading the new mission. One is a fourth year graduate of the Baptist Seminary and the other will be graduating this year. Pray that the Lord will give us many souls.

It is amazing how the Lord works. In 1982 we started a work in that area and one of the families that we reached owned the lot where we are now meeting. We dedicated the property to the Lord that year but as you recall those were the years of terrorism in Perú and there was an active terrorist cell in that area that threatened to harm the family that allowed the church the use of the land. Because of the threat we decided to not risk the death of innocent people. One of the men of that family started to attend the church in Pro and through him and his relation to the new owner we are once again back in the same lot after all these years.

We will be putting a temporary roof on the new work in Juan Pablo the 7th of June and will we opening the work there on the 14th, if all goes well. We will also start our first work at Juan Pablo 2 the last Sunday of this month. Pray for the Alvarado family that will be leading the new work in Juan Pablo.

The work we want to start in Alabarada is still looking for a place to meet. Right now the workers are meeting with children every Saturday afternoon. Nasty, misty weather has started and we need a place to get them in out of the weather. We found a house that is for sale for $15,000. Pray with us about a permanent place.

Thank you to all of you who have been faithful to us in your prayers and giving. And thank you to those of you who have sent special offerings to help us purchase land and build buildings in which to meet.

Why would any one give up a good paying job, comfort, and safety to come to a place where there is not much hope and so much poverty? This is one reason why!

In his Harvest,
