BBFI Missionaries
to Brazil for 41 years
July 31, 2009

Dear friends in Christ,
The promises of God to
protect and care for us certainly do become more precious in perilous times.
Because of the swine flu epidemic, our state government closed all schools
today for over 2,000,000 children in this part of the state for at least two
weeks. Perhaps our very cold, wet, winter weather helped them make the
decision. We have had a month of rain with almost double the normal amount
of rainfall. The temperature is predicted to drop to freezing in two more
days and school rooms are NOT heated.
Today we did something we
have never done before in our ministry. We CANCELED Sunday School for the
next two Sundays. We will have a Prayer Meeting for men on Sunday evenings.
We want to ask you to pray for us that in times like these we will be strong
and take advantage of every opportunity to demonstrate our faith in a
loving, heavenly Father.
Now we want to bring you
up to date on the lump which appeared on Janet’s thyroid in June. She has
had several different tests done. The results of the biopsy done last week
were negative for malignancy but her Japanese doctor explained to us on
Wednesday that there is still a 10% chance that he could encounter some
cancerous cells in a nodule that is 1 3/4 by 1 3/8 inches. Because another
smaller nodule was found he will remove the whole thyroid. He asked her if
she still worked and she told him she helped me in our church by playing the
piano, and directing and singing with the choir. He said "Oh, I play the
piano, too." Yes, he really did say that and now Janet is thinking she may
still take the opportunity and invite him to substitute for her after the
operation. He also told her she would be in the hospital for 2 or 3 days, at
home for 10 days and then it would be 6 months before she could sing.
Surgery is set for August 25 unless the swine flu epidemic gets too bad and
it has to be postponed. We are counting on your prayers.
Our church started saving
money to buy property while it was still a congregation. This month we paid
the equivalent of $20,000.00 in cash for a nice lot. We are now working on
plans for the kind of building which will best suit our needs and be the
most economical. We hope to start building in a few months.
Thanks to all of you who
have sent (or resent) your e-mail addresses. Our computer is finally up and
running and I have put all the e-mail addresses in one list. I only have
about 15 churches left out, to which our letter will go by regular mail.
We want to repeat what we
wrote in our last letter.
Having you as partners to support and pray for us in these uncertain times
is more than a blessing, it is also a comfort to know that you
care about us and our ministry.

Gary and Janet Tomberlin Caixa Postal 1113 83607-000 Campo Largo, PR Brazil
